How to manage agricultural products after harvesting? Discover the ideal microclimate for product storage

In order to reduce product losses in the post-harvest phase, it is necessary to know how to make the best use of the technologies that can be used in this phase, and to select the most suitable ones for the different types of products, in order to preserve quality as much as possible.

We must start from the consideration that horticultural products are and remain, after harvesting, living tissues subject to continuous changes, of which only some are desired because they improve, while most are undesirable as they lead to an irreversible decline in quality. These changes can only be slowed down, within certain limits and with appropriate treatments.

The high diversity of morphological, physiological and chemical composition of horticultural products (roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, etc..) requires in the post-harvest phase a specific management of treatments and storage conditions to maximize the effectiveness and limit the loss of quality.

Optimal temperature and relative humidity for fruit and vegetable storage

Each vegetable requires a specific temperature, which allows it to be stored for as long as possible. We have summarized the main microclimates necessary for the preservation of vegetables in the table below.

Find the right machines

For certain sectors, special climatic environments are needed to avoid damaging production and ensure high-quality standards. Depending on requirements, it may be useful to control humidity, cool, heat, or ventilate to create the perfect climate. A series of machines and solutions are available to meet the many requirements of different applications.
